Our Workshop Process

We're not a traditional writers workshop. At Creative Sphere Writers Workshop, we write during our time together and everyone receives feedback in every session. We use prompts to foster exploration of craft, spark imagination and memory, and write on the spot during the workshop time itself. Every member has the option to share their writing, and fellow members respond in support of new writing with feedback about what works, what's memorable, and what's strong. This way, writers can take the new writing they've created and the feedback they've received, and decide what is next for that piece of writing.

Creative Sphere Writers Workshop uses the Amherst Writers & Artists method, developed by Pat Schneider. 


AWA is based on 5 essential affirmations:

  • Everyone has a strong, unique voice. 
  • Everyone is born with creative genius. 
  • Writing as an art form belongs to all people, regardless of economic class or education level. 
  • The teaching of craft can be done without damage to a writer’s original voice or artistic self-esteem. 
  • A writer is someone who writes.

Our Facilitator

Susan Josephs has been writing in AWA workshops since the 1990s, and is certified to lead workshops in the AWA method. Susan is known for her warm and lively group leadership, inviting writers of all experience levels to deepen their craft. For the past 25 years, she has taught writing throughout the Greater Philadelphia area, from emerging literacy with elementary students to college level writing, most recently at Delaware Valley University. Susan holds a B.A. in English and B.Mus. in Viola Performance from Oberlin College and Conservatory, and an M.S.Ed. in Reading/Writing/Literacy from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education.
